AFPENC President, Joanna Loftis, has been in touch with AFT national to alert them to the horrible ICE situation in Charlotte. Below are resources from AFT that you can use or share with your colleagues and school communities!
In addition, Joanna is working with AFT to hold a webinar that will allow members and others to ask questions and seek advice from experts. Continue doing all you can for our students and families!
AFT has developed several immigration-related resources specifically to support leaders, members, and educators who are facing fear, misinformation, and uncertainty about what’s going on. These include:
Resources for Educators and School Support Staff:
Here is a video clip from the legendary immigrant rights advocate Kent Wong from TEACH: Standing Up for Immigrant Students
Here is another good video from the National Immigration Law Center, one of our collaborator partner organizations: Know Your Rights with Kica Matos
And here is a webinar from 2017 on protecting students in anti-immigrant climate: Protecting Our Students in an Anti-immigration Climate
Resources for Families
Immigration enforcement actions can happen without warning. The AFT checklist is designed to help individuals gather critical information and documents and prepare families in case of an immigration-related emergency. Having a family immigration emergency plan in place can help reduce stress, protect loved ones, and ensure that children and family responsibilities are cared for when someone is detained. We are working on getting this document translated to: Spanish, Tagalog, Haitian Creole, Chinese, and Korean.
All of these resources are on the AFTs immigration hub at www.aft.org/immigration repository of up-to-date tools, guidance, and Know Your Rights materials for educators, students, and families.
